Daryl has been a professional mobile disc jockey since 1992.  Daryl actually began his entertainment career prior to 1992 when he was only 16 years old as a lead vocalist and back-up singer, professional emcee, musician and band leader in a travelling family road show band. 

For several years, Daryl was not only a wedding singer and entertained for weddings, but he performed as the lead singer and guitar player for a very successful, well-known and recognized, award winning regional warm-up band that opened for a number of famous and nationally known song artists. 

Despite Daryl’s background as a professional entertainer, sound and lighting technician, emcee, band manager, Karaoke jockey, DJ entertainer, singer and musician, he enjoys providing the DJ service for weddings most of all.  He is dedicated to creating a fun, unique, and memorable experience for his clients.

Has anyone ever left a wedding day one minute early because the food was cold or the cake didn’t taste good? How about if the flowers or balloons didn’t arrive? NO! Has anyone cut the day short because the entertainment wasn’t very good? … or worse still, didn’t bother to show up at all? YES!!! Countless times!

                      Modern Bride magazine once said that, nationally, the average bride and groom spent over $15,000.00 on everything to do with their wedding day! Locally, we estimate the cost to be closer to about $10,000.00 ... That means if you get married at 2:00 p.m. and the last song is played at 12:00 a.m. (that’s 10 hours) you will have sent $1,000.00 an hour for the most important day of your life to be perfect!

If your deejay isn’t an entertainer and he or she loses the momentum of your show, you gradually lose your guests. By 11:00 p.m. your deejay is now playing to just a handful of people. Soon, you thank the deejay and tell him (or her) to go ahead and shut down for the night, because all of your guests have left!

If your show ends one hour early, that’s $1,000.00 that you have spent on the most important day of your life! Add in the cost of the cheap $500.00 deejay, and you’ve spent $1,500.00 on a performance that let you down!

How to Find a Great DJ or Band for Your Wedding Reception

Words of Wisdom and Advice from DJ Daryl and Horizon Entertainment... 

There’s an old saying which says "The difference between a good carpenter and a bad carpenter is not that the good carpenter doesn’t make mistakes, but that he’s better at turning them into masterstrokes."  You can and should try to prevent mistakes from happening, but it’s a fact of project life that things inevitably can and sometimes do go wrong.  Knowing this, however, should make it easier, not harder, for both brides and grooms not to worry while preparing for their wedding.  Both brides and grooms need to "enjoy" the moment...  Take time to enjoy your wedding preparation plans and don't get overly worried or worked-up about all of the details. That doesn't mean you shouldn't work hard at accomplishing your goals, in order to fulfill your wedding dream plans, but you should go about doing so with a light heart, while accepting diversity and the challenges (along with all of the positive things) that go along with planning for a wedding. 

Like the saying earlier about the good builder, it is also true that the sign of a great wedding DJ is one that has the experience, knowledge, foresight and ability to be able to adapt to any situation and make the best of it...  To make potential mistakes go unnoticed or at least appear to be unnoticeable by your guests, to turn them into masterstrokes, if you will.  Ultimately, Horizon Entertainment wants you to be RELAXED and have FUN at your wedding party, to be thinking of your honeymoon, not the details!

"Since I’ve been in the wedding entertainment business ever since I was sixteen years old, I’ve seen a lot of wedding receptions come and go . . . what I mean by that is, I’ve worked with many brides that are very organized and meticulous and know exactly what they want and then I’ve worked with some that, plainly put, are not all that meticulous.  So whether you hire me to DJ for your wedding or hire another DJ company, take what I am about to say to heart, as though it were coming from a friend, someone who really knows about weddings and cares about your wedding, because I would like to leave you with some helpful and friendly words of advice. 

 

Personally, based on many years of experience, for most weddings, wedding receptions, and wedding dances, I typically prefer to do a complete wedding package and here are some of the main reasons why… 

 

Number One, You only get One Chance and One Chance Only to make a Good First Impression . . .  I don’t care who it is or who you are, whether it’s you and your husband, your reception hall staff or your wedding DJ.  In order to make that good first impression, you need to make a conscientious effort to be prepared to do just that!  For me to make the best first impression I can make on your guests, I need to be mentally and physically prepared ahead of time.  What I mean by that is, I need to arrive at the job site as early as time allows, before any of your wedding guests have arrived, to set-up Horizon Entertainmet's massive music library and touring sound and lighting equipment. 

 

It’s quite frustrating to a DJ or anyone else for that matter, when trying to set-up a large amount of equipment only to find guests standing in the way.  Not only is it frustrating, but it's also time consuming.  It’s not only frustrating to the DJ, but it’s also being inconsiderate to your guests.  Not only is it impolite and inconsiderate, but it’s also frustrating to your guests, especially if the DJ's opening and closing exterior doors, letting in hot or cold air and requiring your guests to move out of the way in order to set-up equipment. 

Secondly, there is no way to do a proper sound check when your guests are there and trying to visit.  In order to do a proper sound check, the DJ needs to be able turn up the sound system volume to the level at which he will be performing during the dance, not at the sound levels he would be playing for dinner music.  A high performance automobile engine may run well at an idle, but start working it hard, if it’s not properly fine-tuned, it will not perform properly or optimally.  Therefore, if your guests have already arrived, there is no possible way for your DJ to perform a proper audio and microphone check without being inconsiderate to your guests. 

Thirdly, a DJ not only needs to set-up a sound system and perform a sound check and mic check, but he also needs to set-up a lighting system and do a light check.  Again, you simply shouldn’t be setting up equipment and have bright disco lights flashing once the guests begin to arrive.  A DJ simply can’t do these types of things without feeling rushed and being impolite to your guests. 

Fourthly, if the DJ must rush around in a mad dash to accomplish his purposes before the dance, he will likely be feeling somewhat inconvenienced and your guests are likely to be somewhat frustrated by the DJ, as well.  Again, this isn't a good way to set the tone for the evening.  The more rushed a DJ feels before the start of the event and the less time he has to prepare himself mentally and physically for an evening of fun (not stress), the less successful and less likely he will be to put on a stellar performance! 

As for me, I prefer to be completely set-up at least a half-hour before your first guests arrive.  This gives me time to wind down and cool down by getting a drink of water and relaxing.  In addition, it also allows time for me to go and freshen up, put on some cologne, even brush my teeth if I want and then get dressed into my tuxedo.  Now that I know everything is set-up and working properly and I’ve had time to clean-up and get dressed into my tuxedo, I’m into the groove! I’m ready to party!  I have the right mental attitude!  I’m in the right state of mind and I can again begin preparing for the evening by going over the list of events found in my wedding reception guide sheet that were laid out far in advance of your reception. 

Now that I’m refreshed . . . I'm dressed in my tuxedo!  I'm ready to go with my sound and lighting equipment!  Everything is sounding great and working perfectly (before your guests have arrived, of course:) . . . I’m mentally prepared, psyched up and ready for an evening full of fun and celebration!  I can now put on a big smile, mingle with your guests, work with your photographer and videographer, write down a few more notes, take down a few song requests early in the evening and even get to know a few of your guests . . . before your dance ever starts!  Again, this sets the tone for the entire evening! 

Once you and your husband arrive, we can plan ahead to do a Grand Entrance!  We can pick out a song that you would like to enter the reception hall with!  I can then request that your guests stand and applaud as I announce your names and you enter the hall with your bridal party!  These are the types of things that make a positive impression on your guests and they set the tone for the entire evening. 

Remember, We only get One Chance to make a Good First Impression on Your Guests!

From the time your first guests arrive and enter the reception hall, I continue to work your audience by making announcements, when appropriate and as needed, while playing up-tempo background music that is quiet enough for people to talk above, yet audible enough that they have an enjoyable time listening and tapping their toes along to the music!  I can’t count how many times, I’ve received so many positive comments and feedback, especially from some of the older guests on the various types of great sounding background music that I play.  In addition, I am available for your entire evening to make other announcements, such as the cutting of the wedding cake and to play an appointed song for all such special occasions, while encouraging your guests to grab their cameras and video cameras to capture precious moments and special events, to make future memories! 

Finally, the wedding reception hall will often have me request that your guests be seated before dinner.  The wait-staff may want me to announce to your guests that they will be serving the head table first, then the immediate family, etc.  If you have a buffet line, for example, the reception hall may ask me to announce that your guests remain seated until their table is released by a reception hall wait-staff member.  Next, you too may want me to make special announcements, such as (if you choose) asking the blessing or saying grace before the meal.  I furnish a SHURE professional UHF wireless microphone for this purpose, which may also be used for making the Best Man's Toast, Maid/Matron of Honor's Toast, etc.  Once dinner is over, the tables and chairs have been put away and the dance floor has been cleared, since I’m there working anyway, you are free to start your dance any time you choose!
